TRISTAN + ISODE is a complex love triangle, the hunks, raw emotion, and breathtaking European landscapes make for the perfect backdrop for the romantic/tragic tale of Tristan and Isolde. I'm a lover of romantic action flicks, I decided to give this story a try. I was not disappointed. Filmed in Ireland and the Czech Republic, this movie offers edge-of-your-seat along with believable characters and complex plot twists.
Tristan and Isolde is a reminder that we all cannot marry our true love and that sometimes we marry out of duty....and this of course is the tradgedy that is much of life and things we sometimes face in adulthood.
Those familiar with the tales of Arthur and Guinevere will recognize Tristan - many stories, after all, recall that this Tristan is the same knight who sat at King Arthur's round table. But this tale is not only of heroism and chivalry but also of love. Tristan falls in love with the beautiful and mysterious Irish lady who saves him from near death. He returns to his family and his guardian Lord Mark (Rufus Sewell) in England and later promises to win him the Irish king's daughter for a wife.
He soon discovers that this Irish princess is Isolde, the same young woman who saved his life. A love triangle then develops as Isolde marries Lord Mark even as she still loves Tristan. Tristan then has to chose between loyalty to his king (and the man who raised him like a son) or the love of Isolde.
I thought James Franco played Tristan brilliantly - broken hearted but not brooding, he seemed to only come to life during battle before meeting Isolde, and then afterward only in their stolen moments together. Many of the reviews I've read seem to think that he played the role flatly, but I thought the subtlety of expression in his eyes and body language was impressive. Confident as a warrior, but almost innocent in intimacy, I thought he walked the thin line between adult and youth effectively.
Sophia Myles captured the fire, vulnerability and desire of Isolde with fervor - and that's not easy to do. Sophia Myles delivered her lines subtly, tinting words with emotional depth -scorn, joy, passion, frustration, disappointment - that was understated and yet passionate. She, too, managed to portray a delicate balance between the innocence of idealistic youth and the realities of a woman who found her self in an unenviable position.
Rufus Sewell was fantastic. As king, he had to walk the thin line between diplomacy and his own frustrations; as a man, he came alive when with Isolde, and so her betrayal was all that more heartbreaking, a scene which he played with focus and power.
I highly recommend "Tristan + Isolde" to those who enjoy well made love stories or Arthurian tales. I would especially recommend this to fans of Sophia Myles, James Franco and Rufus Sewell - three fine actors who really shine in this film and elevate it to something more than a Romeo & Juliet-type tale. This is MUST-HAVE romantic/action flick DVD.
