Rebel Without a Cause released a month after James Dean's death in October 26, 1955. This film immediately attracted and rewarded great interest and has continued to do so. This movie is about a teenage rebel 'without' a cause. Actually, much of their behavior is explained by their unhappiness in their dysfunctional families.
Jim Stark (James Dean) feels smothered by his parents who move from one town to another, hoping that he will finally 'find himself'.
Judy (Natalie Woods) desperately needs love from a father who is unwilling and unable to provide it.
Plato (Sal Mineo) seems to have no contact whatsoever with his parents. Meanwhile. Judy eagerly agrees to be gang leader Buzz Gunderson's trophy girlfriend. After his death from the 'chicken run', she shifts her attention to Jim. Jim, Judy and Plato briefly become a 'family', in one scene in an abandoned mansion even pretending to be father, mother and son.
All 3 leading stars, who experienced troubled lives of their own, suffered premature deather under unsual and tragic circumstances:

They premature deaths enrich even more of their roles as teenage rebels.

The film received only 3 Academy Awards nominations: Best Supporting Actor (Sal Mineo), Best Supporting Actress (Natalie Wood) and Best Motion Picture Story. It wasn't nominated for either Best Picture or Best Director.

Ironically, James Dean wasn't nominated for his iconic role in this film, but was nominated instead for his Best Actor performance as insecure, tortured, neurotic loner and unappreciated son Cal Trask in his 1st major film in East of Eden (1955). He was also nominated as Best Actor in 1957 for his performance as Jett Rink in his 3rd and final film, Giant (1956), it released a year after his death.

I saw this film racently for the first time, I got hook by it, maybe because of James Dean powerful performance. Yes, of cause, i admire his method acting. I was also impressed by the cast quality of acting, but probably inevitably, much of this film now seems out-dated to me. This is a classic movie. When seeing it, I have the feeling that i have opened a time capsule from 1955. If it's a film you already know you love, you will love the DVD that released 2005. The film is Hollywood's best 50s film of rebellious and restless youth that spawned many other teen exploitation films in its wake. Don't worry the film wasn't in black and white. The film have restored to Digital Transfer & Audio Element. If you haven't seen it, whether you are a teen or an adult, you will be moved by this story (like i do) and it's a MUST have for your classic DVD collection.
